The Challenge: Replacing a Failing Wooden Bulkhead on the St. Johns River
A riverfront home and guest house in St. Johns, Florida, turned to Novum Wall when a critical structural element supporting their outdoor living spaces began to fail. Situated along the scenic banks of the St. Johns River, the property features a pool, patio, lanai, fire pit, and private dock.
Originally, the property relied on two retaining systems:
- A vinyl bulkhead along the river, reinforced with rip rap and capped with cast-in-place concrete to protect against erosion, tidal changes, and storm surges.
- A timber wall set farther inland, designed to create a two-tiered yard where the home, guest house, and outdoor amenities sit on the upper level.
Over time, Florida’s harsh climate took its toll on the timber structure. Heat, humidity, and moisture exposure accelerated deterioration, leaving the wall visibly weakened and structurally compromised. This meant the patio and pool deck above the wall were losing support, and the home and guest house foundations could eventually be affected. The deteriorating timber wall had also become an eyesore on an otherwise stunning riverfront property.
Beyond aesthetics, the homeowners faced a larger question: how to stabilize the property without tearing apart the carefully designed landscape. The property owners needed a retaining wall solution that would:
- Support the upper tier containing the pool, patio, residence, and guest house
- Provide a long-term alternative to wood that would not rot, deteriorate, or trap water.
- Allow for integrated stairways connecting the upper yard to the dock
- Install directly in front of the existing timber wall, minimizing excavation
- Deliver a high-end, natural appearance appropriate for the riverfront setting
Initially, the homeowners considered simply rebuilding another timber wall in front of the existing wall. But after experiencing the maintenance cycle of wood retaining structures, they wanted a permanent solution designed specially to perform in Florida’s demanding environment.

The Solution: A Novum Wall Gravity System Built for Structural Stability
The project team turned to Novum Wall, a locally produced precast modular block retaining wall system manufactured by Truemont Materials. Novum Wall is a machine-set modular block gravity wall that delivers structural support without extensive excavation or anchors.
Rather than removing the existing timber wall, which would have required significant sensitive excavation near the pool and structures, the team installed a gravity retaining wall directly in front of the failing bulkhead. Unlike mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls that rely on geogrid reinforcement extending deep into the retained soil, gravity walls use the mass and interlocking design of the blocks themselves to resist earth pressure. This approach made Novum Wall ideal for the site.
The Novum Wall system allowed installers to:
- Construct the new wall tightly in front of the existing bulkhead, avoiding major excavation
- Shift structural loads into a stable engineered system
- Eliminate the need for geogrid or soil anchors
- Maintain stability despite the limited working space near the residence
Two stairways were also seamlessly incorporated into the wall, providing direct pathways to the lower yard and the dock, replacing the previous longer walk-around route.
For the installation team, the project also introduced a new approach. The contractor had previously worked primarily with vinyl and timber bulkheads, which typically require soil anchors for support. The gravity-wall concept, which delivers stability without anchors or other reinforcement, proved efficient, prompting him to rely on Novum Wall for future projects.

The Project: Modular Block Retaining Wall Installation on a Florida Riverfront
A tight site footprint and limited access made modular block construction the ideal solution. Waterfront projects often present logistical challenges: limited working space, sensitive landscapes, and restricted access for installation equipment. Novum Wall is designed specifically to handle these conditions. Installation uses compact construction equipment such as skid steers and mini excavators, allowing crews to work efficiently even in constrained areas. Each Novum Wall block provides nearly 3 square feet of face area, significantly accelerating installation compared to traditional hand-set segmental retaining walls (SRW).
Key project advantages included:
- Faster Installation. Large modular blocks allowed the wall to be installed quickly while maintaining precise alignment and structural integrity.
- Design Flexibility. The Novum system supports integration of features such as tight 90-degree corners, concave and convex curves, and architectural elements, including stairways.
- Minimal Site Disruption. By building directly in front of the failing timber wall, the team minimized excavation and avoided disturbing the surrounding landscaping and structures.
- Enhanced Drainage and Erosion Control. Novum Wall’s wet cast concrete composition and interlocking block technology promote proper water drainage and create a long-term barrier against erosion.
The finished project transformed what had been a deteriorating structure into a clean, engineered retaining system designed for long-term performance. The experience also gave the installer confidence in the modular block approach, which led them to schedule another Novum Wall project shortly afterward.

The Outcome: Long-Term Riverfront Retaining Wall Performance
A durable gravity wall system restored stability while enhancing the property’s appearance and usability. With the Novum Wall installation complete, the homeowners gained a riverfront retaining wall that protects the property while elevating the overall landscape design.
The project delivered several major benefits:
- Structural support for the home, guest house, patio, and pool
- A durable retaining wall system resistant to rot, moisture, and climate damage
- Integrated stair access connecting the upper yard to the dock
- A design that follows grade changes naturally without appearing improvised
- A dramatic visual upgrade, giving the retaining wall the refined character of natural stone
Most importantly, the homeowners no longer face the ongoing maintenance cycle that often accompanies timber retaining structures. What began as a failing wooden wall became an opportunity to install a permanent engineered solution. A lifetime wall system that enhances both the structural integrity and the beauty of the riverfront property.
